5 Signs That You Need to Replace Your Siding

Ask homeowners about their plans for their next home improvement project, and siding replacement just might not be among their answers.

Old siding may not be as obvious as roofs, gutters, or commercial deck railings in Portland, OR. But they are equally exposed to the same weather conditions, therefore it deserves the same amount of care. If you notice the following signs, you should plan on replacing your siding.

  1. Frequent repaints. If you find yourself having to repaint your siding as frequent as every year, then new siding is definitely in order. A quality coat of paint typically lasts three to five years without needing a retouch. If the paint peels, cracks, or chips early on, this means the paint couldn’t “grip” the siding any more. Better yet, forgo the paint and get colored vinyl siding. James Hardie® offers a huge array of residential and commercial siding in Beaverton, OR, that can match your home’s existing color palette.
  1. Dry rot. Go around the house and tap the siding with something firm, like a screwdriver or a drum stick. If pieces fall off, then you have dry rot. This is more common on wood than vinyl siding. If you want to keep the wooden look, we offer durable and sustainable cedar siding that is treated to resist dry rot.
  1. Cracks and holes. A couple of cracked or loose siding shouldn’t be a problem, but if this is a daily occurrence, this means the siding is too old and can’t hold on to the outer walls anymore. Cracks and holes could introduce rainwater into the walls and should be addressed immediately.
  1. Water damage. Moisture is something that you will want to keep away from your inner walls. Signs of water damage are hard to ignore, such as warped, rotten or soft siding; peeling wallpaper; or bubbles in the siding. If you see mold or mildew, this means moisture has been present for some time.
  1. High energy bills. We’d usually point to inefficient insulation or faulty HVAC systems as the culprit when talking about high energy bills, but that’s not always the case. Your residential or commercial windows in Portland, Oregon, could be newly-installed, but if your siding is failing, your home’s insulation is failing too.
